New retail jobs in Staffordshire

Sainsbury's has announced the creation of a new supermarket in Leek, Staffordshire, that will help boost the region's retail jobs sector.

According to the Sentinel, the company is looking to develop a major new supermarket and petrol station on the Churnet Works site on Macclesfield Road and the move could increase opportunities for people looking for a career in retail in the area.

"The development will help with the regeneration of the old industrial site, providing new homes, creating employment and improving the town's shopping offer," Jamie Cowen, head of property development at Sainsbury's, told the newspaper.

He continued: "The resulting retention of local custom will also benefit existing traders in the town centre, with linked trips between the town centre and the developed site on Macclesfield Road."

Sainsbury's is looking to significantly boost the availability of retail jobs it offers across the country by focusing less on huge supermarkets and more on local stores.

The company announced in May plans to develop a network of "corner shops" that would create as many as 6,000 new retail jobs across the UK.
